MINDFULNESS
If you wish to make an apple pie truly from scratch, you must first invent the universe. ~ Carl Sagan
How is your mind? Is your mind full? Our heads can be so busy, filled with what we need to do, or repeating a conversation we've had with another person,
or it might start to wander and imagine over and over situations that you have been involved in.
Perhaps it might be thinking of the past, worrying over the future,
ruminating over and over... If it is constantly busy, then the practice of mindfulness may be of help.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the practice of bringing the mind back into the present moment, and continuing to bring the mind back to the present moment -
gently and kindly - whenever
it wanders away again.
Whatever we are doing, we can do so mindfully, whether we are eating, talking, listening, walking, or when driving.
When we allow our minds to come fully present into the present moment, we can silence the mind noise and start to experience peace of mind.
If you let cloudy water settle, it will become clear.
If you let your upset mind settle, your course will become clear.
By focusing on the present moment, people who practice mindfulness find that they are less likely to get caught up in worries about the
future or regrets over the past, are less preoccupied with concerns about success and self-esteem, and are better able to form deep connections with others.
Kindness is an essential component of mindfulness. Bringing kindness to yourself as you work with your mind, bringing kindness to others,
is all a part of mindfulness practice.
Mindfulness has been found to be an effective element in the treatment of depression, especially preventing relapse and for assisting with mood
regulation. For substance abuse, for eating disorders, for conflict, and anxiety.
Benefits of Mindfulness Techniques.
In addition to greater well-being, scientists have discovered that
when practiced daily, mindfulness can help relieve stress, treat heart disease, lower blood pressure, reduce chronic pain,
improve sleep and alleviate gastrointestinal difficulties.
